世界のファッショニスタに学べ：イーブス・バーノー

政治家に洗練やエレガンスを期待するのは難しい。しかし、ホワイトハウスの元顧問で映画監督に転身したイーブス・バーノーは、その例外である。

元オバマ政権ホワイトハウス副ソーシャルセクレタリーであり、現在は政治、文化、アートの交差点に身を置き、多様なプロジェクト（映画、公共政策、スピーチ、イベントなど）に関わっている。Hatch House Productionsのマネージングディレクターやサンダンス研究所理事会会長を務める。
A former Deputy Social Secretary in the Obama White House, he now works at the intersection of politics, culture, and the arts, engaging in diverse projects such as film, public policy, speechwriting, and events. He serves as Managing Director of Hatch House Productions and as Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Sundance Institute.

 

 

 

　イーブス・バーノーは、自分のことを「引退した政治家」と呼んでいる。しかし、その鋭い直感はオバマ政権時代のホワイトハウスにいた頃と変わらない。政策やスピーチライティングから映画や文化に至るまで幅広い分野に精通し、どんな場でも人を惹きつける存在だ。彼と話をすると、芸術から政治、歴史、映画まで、話題が次々と広がっていく。

 

　私たちが最初に出会ったきっかけはテーラリングだった。彼は『Huntsman: Redefining Savile Row』という本を企画した人物で、私は幸運にもその執筆を担当することになった。そして現在、彼は最新作となるドキュメンタリーの完成に取り組んでいる。題材はジャック・ケルアックで、タイトルは『Kerouac’s Road: The Beat of a Nation』だ。

 

 

　Ebs Burnough calls himself a lapsed politician, though his instincts remain as sharp as in his Obama White House days. A master of many fields — from policy and speechwriting to filmmaking and culture — he is invariably the most engaging figure in any room. A conversation with him can span a multitude of topics, from art to politics, history, and film. What first connected us was tailoring: he was the driving force behind Huntsman: Redefining Savile Row, a book I was fortunate enough to write. Now he is completing his latest project, a documentary on Jack Kerouac, titled Kerouac’s Road: The Beat of a Nation.

 

 

イーブスは、自らの「カフリンクス好き」を隠そうとはしない。琥珀のカフリンクスは、夫ピエール・ラグランジュと訪れたパリのヴィンテージショップで出会った逸品。象をかたどった一対は、彼が初めて南アフリカを旅した際、ケープタウンで手に入れた思い出の品だ。そして〈タフィン〉のカフリンクスは、記念日に贈られた特別なギフトである。Ebs freely admits his weakness for cufflinks. He found the amber cufflinks in a vintage shop in Paris with his husband, Pierre Lagrange. The elephant pieces came from Cape Town, during his first trip to South Africa. The Taffin cufflinks were an anniversary gift.

 

 

〈ロレックス デイトジャスト〉は、イーブスの生まれ年に合わせ、裏蓋にハートを刻んだバースデーギフトだ。「時計が大好きなんです」と彼は語る。時計は彼にスタイルの感覚を与え、そして自身の姿勢をも表現する。A Rolex Datejust, a birthday gift with Ebs’ birth year and a heart engraved on the back. ‘I love watches,’ he says. Watches give him a sense of style and his sense of attitude.

 

 

〈カルティエ クラッシュ〉は、イーブスが「どうしても頭から離れなかった」という時計だ。タイムレスでありながら創造性にあふれたこのモデルは、めったに身に着けないか、あるいは常に身に着けているかのどちらかだと言われる。彼にとっては、もちろん後者である。The Cartier Crash was a watch Ebs ‘could not stop thinking about.’ Timeless and creative, it is one of those pieces you either rarely wear or never take off. For Ebs, it is the latter.

 

 

〈パテック フィリップ ゴールデン・エリプス〉は、イーブスにとっての“ミーティングウォッチ”だ。エグゼクティブな場面で威厳を添えてくれる存在である。一方、〈JAR〉の時計は遊び心があり控えめで、どんな装いにも自在に合わせることができる。This Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse is Ebs’ ‘meeting watch.’ It lends authority in executive settings. Fun and unassuming, he can wear the JAR watch with almost any outfit.

 

 

歴史性とモダンを融合させたイーブスのフロックコートは、フランスの友人から贈られた生地を用い、〈ハンツマン〉のクリエイティブ・ディレクター、キャンベル・ケアリーによって仕立てられた。Blending the historical and the modern, Ebs’ frock coat was made with Huntsman’s Creative Director, Campbell Carey, from a fabric gifted by a friend in France.

 

 

ブルーのスエードホースビットローファーにデニム。カラーの観点からも、そしてロックンロールの精神からも、このジャケットを引き立てる欠かせないアイテムだ。Blue suede horsebit loafers and jeans — essentials that complement the jacket from both a colour perspective and a rock ’n’ roll one.
