（English follows）「クラシコイタリア」真っ盛りだった1990年代～2000年代、イタリア人が最も愛する英国靴ブランドはチャーチだった。チャーチはそれよりもずっと以前から、世界中のエグゼクティブたちから寵愛されてきたわけだが、チャーチの靴をサルトリア仕立ての上質なテーラードスーツで、よりクラシックかつエレガントに合わせていたイタリア人の装いに大いに憧れたものだ。

 

　そのチャーチが1999年にプラダグループの傘下に入ったニュースは、本格靴ブームに沸いていた当時の日本でも大きな話題となった。そこからのチャーチは、今日に至るまでマスターピースを大切にし続け、名作はさらに輝きを増し、またときにハッとするほど美しくアップデートされた靴を世に送り出してきた。

 

　1974年に登場したプレーントウのマスターピース「シャノン」をアップデートした「シャノン T」は、その好例だ。ボリューム感のあるサンモリッツ社のラバーソールを採用して足元にエッジを効かせつつ、アッパーには控えめなシボ感としなやかな風合いを備えたソフトグレインカーフレザーを採用。シンプルなデザインの美しさがより際立ち、見ての通り、ただただ美しい。こちら、クラシックな装いにはもちろん、人気のワイドパンツを合わせた装いにもスッと溶け込んでくれそうだ。

 

 

　Back in the 1990s and 2000s, during the heyday of the ‘Classico Italia’ movement, no British shoemaker was more beloved by the Italians than Church’s. Of course, Church’s had already enjoyed a long-standing reputation as a favourite among discerning executives around the world. But for those of us who admired the Italian way of dressing, there was something especially alluring about the way Italian gentlemen paired their sartoria-made tailored suits with the classic elegance of Church’s shoes. It was a look that spoke of refinement and timeless style. The acquisition of Church’s by the Prada Group in 1999 was major news in Japan, where the classic shoe boom was in full swing. Since then, Church’s has remained faithful to its masterpieces, enhancing its iconic models and, at times, offering breathtaking updates that elevate these classics to new heights. A prime example of this evolution is the Shannon T, an updated take on the plain-toe masterpiece first introduced in 1974. Featuring a chunky, ridged rubber sole by St. Moritz for a bold, contemporary edge, the shoe’s upper is crafted from soft grain calf leather with a subtle texture and supple finish.
