【神々の道具と作りしもの】長谷川裕也氏：足元に、光あれ

靴磨きの世界に革命をもたらし、次なる地平の創造に踏み出した「靴磨き家」長谷川裕也氏。今、改めてその偉業を振り返ってみよう。

1984年生まれ。2008年にブリフトアッシュをオープンし、本格靴磨きという新境地を開拓。2017年にはロンドンで開催される靴磨き選手権でチャンピオンに輝き、名実ともに業界のトップランナーとして地位を確立した。2024年4月をもって靴磨き職人としては引退し、「靴磨き家」として新たなステージへ。その活動にますます注目が集まっている。

Born in 1984, Yuya Hasegawa opened Brift H in 2008, breaking new ground in the field of authentic shoeshine. In 2017, he won the first World Championships in Shoe Shining in London, establishing himself as a top runner in the industry, both in name and reality. He retired as a shoe polisher in April 2024 and entered a new stage of his life as a shoe shine artist. His activities are attracting increasing attention.

 

 

 

　長谷川裕也氏は、“GODS of CREATION”と題した当連載に最もふさわしい人物かもしれない。ブリフトアッシュ黎明期に彼が成した革新の数々は、さながら天地創造の神話である。客と同じ目線に立って靴磨きを“魅せる”カウンタースタイル。トウからヒールまで、輝きを帯のように繋げる磨き方。今ではプロの常識となっている、クリームを素手で塗り込む技法も彼が広めたものだ。

 

「一足500円で靴磨きを始めた僕に、“1万円の値をつけられるようになれ”と助言してくれたお客様がいました。それに発奮して試行錯誤を重ねていった結果ですね。僕の職人引退時には、実際に1万円の特別メニューもご提供させていただきました」

 

　ファンには周知のとおり、長谷川氏は昨年靴磨き職人を“引退”した。といっても普通の意味とは真逆で、靴磨きの新境地を拓くため、あえて現場とは一線を引くという表明である。

 

「靴磨きを、華道や茶道のような“道”へ昇華させたいのです。ただ、あまりニッチな方向性に傾いてはいけない。バーバーで身だしなみを整えるような感覚で、紳士の身近な習慣として親しんでほしい。このプロジェクトは20年計画ゆえ、まだ水面下で活動している状況。しかし、いずれ具体的な成果を披露できると思います」と長谷川氏。彼はまさに、次なる天地創造へと動きだしたのだ。

 

 

ポリッシュ用のワックスはサフィールを採用。オリジナルの乳化性クリームは化粧品の技術を応用したもの。色の調合は長谷川氏が自ら手仕事で行っている。¥3,080 ブラシ各種は江戸屋に別注。毛の根元を鉄線でまとめてから手植えした逸品だ。豚毛¥14,630、山羊毛¥30,580、馬毛¥16,995 赤い磨き布は大阪の晒し染め工場に別注し、早く光るよう硬さや毛並みを調整している。¥1,320 all by Brift H／ Saphir wax is used for polishing. 靴の色に合わせてクリームを調合することも。これも長谷川流のアイデアだ。Creams are mixed to match the colour of the shoes.

　Yuya Hasegawa is perhaps the most appropriate person to be included in the GODS of CREATION series. His innovations in the early days of Brift H are not unlike a myth of creation. His counter style of shoeshine shows off shoe polishing at the same eye level as the customer, while his method of polishing shoes from toe to heel connects the shine like a belt. He also introduced the technique of applying cream with bare fingers, which is now common practice among professionals.

 

　‘I had a customer’, Hasegawa recalled, ‘who advised me that I should be able to charge 10,000 yen for a pair of shoes that I had started polishing for 500 yen. I was inspired by that advice and continued to work on it through trial and error.’ Hasegawa retired as a shoe polisher last year in order to break new ground in the shoe polishing industry.

 

　‘I want to elevate shoeshine to a “way” like the way of flower arrangement or the tea ceremony’, he said. ‘However, I don’t want to go too far in a niche direction. We want it to become a familiar custom for gentlemen, just like grooming yourself at a barber’s. This is a 20-year project, so we are still working behind the scenes, but I think we will soon be able to show concrete results.’ Hasegawa has indeed begun the next phase of creation.
