【神々の道具と作りしもの】岡本 拓也：革小物司の“秘密道具”

魔法のような独自技法で唯一無二の革小物を生み出すアルチザン、岡本拓也氏。決して真似のできない秘密は、氏が自ら磨き上げる“道具”にあった。

1970年生まれ。独学で革小物の技を研 究し、2006年 にTAKUYA MADE BY HANDを立ち上げる。2010年にブランド名をT・MBHと改めて再始動し、大きな注目の的に。機能性に裏打ちされた王道デザインを守りつつオリジナリティを確立するため、“技術”から独自開発することが身上。葉合せを筆頭に、数十にも及ぶ製法を今まで考案している。
Born in 1970. Self-taught in leather craftsmanship, he launched TAKUYA MADE BY HAND in 2006. In 2010, he relaunched under the new brand name T· MBH, drawing significant attention. To establish originality while upholding classic designs underpinned by functionality, he prioritises developing unique techniques from the ground up. To date, he has devised dozens of manufacturing methods, with HA- AWASE being the foremost example.

 

 

 

　THE RAKE読者にとって、岡本拓也氏が発明した「葉合せ」の解説は釈迦に説法だろう。縫うのではなく“貼り合わせる”ことで叶えた、究極のミニマリズム。剃刀のように研ぎ澄まされているのに縫製以上の強度も実現できるという、革命的な技法だ。氏がトランクショーを催すと、かつては同業者がその技術を盗みにきたというが、近頃はそれもめっきり減ったという。真似しようと思っても、それが不可能なことを悟るからだ。それほど超絶な技術が……と水を向けると、氏はニヤリと笑った。

 

「実は、仕立ての技自体に秘密はないのです。もちろんそれなりの修練は要しますが、努力すれば大抵身につく。我々の虎の子は革 包 丁。それも道具自体ではなく、“研ぎ方”に極意があります。葉合せは革の端を極限まで薄く漉くことが要になるのですが、そのためには革包丁を完璧に研ぎ上げることが不可欠。これは知識と技術の両方を要し、私以外にこなせる人は目下存在しません。ですから、何十本にもわたる革包丁はすべて私自身が研いでいるんですよ」

 

　では、その包丁研ぎに相当な労力が？ と尋ねると、それもまた否。

 

「実はちょっとした発想の転換で、意外なほど短時間で研げるようになったのです。どんな方法かって？ ……それだけは絶対に秘密ですね」

 

　革小物司の謎は今なお深い。

This ultimate minimalism is achieved not by sewing, but by ‘bonding together.’ A revolutionary technique, it delivers razor-sharp precision while achieving a strength surpassing that of traditional stitching. At his trunk shows, fellow craftsmen attempted to steal his techniques until they realized they were impossible to imitate. When asked about such extraordinary skill, he grinned. ‘Actually, the tailoring technique itself holds no secret. Of course, it requires considerable practice, but most can master it with effort. Our prized possessions are our leather knives. But the secret isn’t the tool itself—it’s the sharpening technique. The key to HA-AWASE is thinning the leather edge to its utmost limit. This requires perfect sharpening of the leather knife. It demands both knowledge and skill. Currently, only I can do this. That’s why I personally sharpen every single one myself.’ Asked about the effort involved in sharpening a knife, he replied, ‘Actually, with a slight shif t in perspective, I was a ble to shar pen one surprisingly quickly. By what method? …That, I absolutely cannot reveal.’ The mystery of the Leather Goods Master remains profound.

 

 

これが秘伝の技術によって研ぎ上げられた革包丁。刃先が完璧な直線と面によって構成されていることが要になるのだそう。刃先はすぐに摩耗してしまうため、同じ包丁を大量にストックしている。These knives are honed using a secret technique. The key lies in the blade tip, formed by a perfect straight line and surface.

 

 

葉合せによって仕立てられた革小物。ベージュの部分と黒い部分は別の革だが、完全に一体化している。ここまで精密に貼り合わせると、縫製するよりも端がヘタリにくくなるという。Leather accessories are crafted using HAAWASE techniques. The beige and black sections are different leathers, yet they blend seamlessly. Such precise bonding makes the edges less prone to fraying than if sewn.

革の端を限りなく鋭利な三角形に漉き落としてから貼り合わせることで、まるで一体化したかのような接ぎ目になる。ここで不可欠なのが秘伝の革包丁なのだ。By shaving the leather edges into an extremely sharp triangle before bonding them, the seam appears as if it were one solid piece. The secret weapon here is the leather knife.
